Running V2MOM alongside Primer

Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, Measures, the Salesforce model keeps its narrative; Primer runs the measures.

Respecting the system you already run

V2MOM works because each company builds its own Vision and Values statement and then cascades through Methods, Obstacles, and Measures. The narrative discipline is the whole point, we are not going to ask you to trade that for a table. This guide is about giving the Measures row of every V2MOM a proper data home while leaving the Vision, Values, Methods, and Obstacles exactly where they live today.

Translating V2MOM concepts into Primer

Only Measures map to Primer's core model. The other four V-rows stay in whatever narrative document you already use.

Source conceptPrimer equivalentTranslation note
Vision(out of scope, stays in your V2MOM document)Vision is narrative, not data. Primer does not try to model it.
Values(out of scope)Same, values live in your V2MOM doc.
Methodsoperational goalEach Method is an operational goal the team owns.
Obstaclestyped goal dependencies with blocksObstacles become blocking dependencies between goals, made queryable and visible.
Measuresmetric in the quintile stackFive-tier thresholds encode the V2MOM target and the guardrails around it.

Three ways to try Primer alongside what you already run

None of these ask you to give anything up. Pick the lowest cost option you can get away with. Your own data will tell you what fits.

Path 1: Concurrent

Run Primer concurrently

Keep your V2MOM document verbatim. Copy the Measures row into Primer as metrics and the Methods row as operational goals. Let Primer compute health and leave the narrative rows where they are.

Path 2: Combine

Combine inside Primer

Store a link to the V2MOM document on each associated strategic goal. Primer then becomes the place you click into when a leader asks 'how are we tracking against the Measures we wrote this year?'

Path 3: A/B test

A/B test one V2MOM

Pick the V2MOM whose Measures row is hardest to track in the existing document. Mirror it into Primer and see whether the quarterly reviews feel tighter.

What Primer contributes beyond the standard V2MOM practice

V2MOM is narrative-first by design. Primer adds the data-first layer that narrative alone cannot compute.

Typed Obstacle relationships

Obstacles become blocks links in the goal graph, not bullet points. If an Obstacle changes shape, the dependency graph reflects it immediately.

Measurable tiers

Each Measure gets five named bands, not just a single number. Leadership can see trajectory, not only current state.

Snapshot locking

Once the annual V2MOM is committed, Measures freeze. No quiet mid-year target revision without a recorded reason.

Cascade across V2MOMs

Departmental V2MOMs link to the corporate V2MOM through cascaded goals. A data view complements the narrative view.

Per-measure cadence

V2MOMs are typically annual. If some Measures need a weekly pulse, per metric cadence on the individual metric carries that without changing the V2MOM itself.

Customization suggestions, code you may want to modify

V2MOM-heavy teams usually care most about keeping the narrative document central. Customizations tend to be about linking back, not replacing.

  1. V2MOM document URL on goal

Add a simple V2MOM link column on strategic goals. The page renders it as a prominent hyperlink back to the narrative document.

  2. Vision / Values banner on the dashboard

A small, persistent banner on top of the metric view showing the corporate Vision and Values statements. Pure copy change in your theme.

  3. Obstacle list view

A dedicated page listing every blocks dependency across the organization, the V2MOM Obstacles row turned into a live operational queue.

  4. Annual V2MOM packet export

A PDF route that interleaves the narrative sections with the Primer-computed Measures roll-up. Ready to hand to the board.

  5. Quarterly narrative update

A form where the owner of each Method adds a one-paragraph narrative update per quarter, stored alongside the goal for end-of-year review.

You bought a perpetual source license. Every part of Primer is yours to change. These are suggestions, not requirements.

Let your team discover what fits

V2MOM practitioners usually want the narrative left alone. Use Primer as the data layer, not the voice, and let the team decide how much of each they want.

Try it on this year's Measures row

Load the Measures row of your current corporate V2MOM into Primer. The narrative stays wherever you keep it today.
